If you’re here, you probably already know but we don’t think it can hurt to say it again.
The plants make acidic cannabinoids like CBDa, CBGa, CBCa, etc. Decarboxylation is the process of converting acidic cannabinoids to their neutral form through heat, time or chemical reactions: CBDa -> CBD, CBGa -> CBG, etc. In other blog posts we have talked about the fact that decarboxylation is breaking a carbon chain off the molecular structure of the acidic cannabinoid.
What does that mean for me?
It’s pretty complex, no doubt about it. There’s no good way to address it all at once so this time I’d like to focus on the fact that, although they are fats (fatty acids), they actually do move fairly well in water. The real curiosity is that it appears acidic cannabinoids can travel well in water or fat, making them versatile and effective for many applications. From sublingual (under the tongue) to topical (on the skin), a little bit of extra water solubility goes a long way.
The research is far from complete but there are many reports, both in published studies and anecdotes, that acidic cannabinoids may be vastly more bioavailable than their neutral counterparts. The hypothesis is that the increased water solubility is largely responsible for this difference. After all, our blood is mostly water so it’s pretty easy to see how that could be the case.
Nano-emulsion is a popular process where processors chop the oily droplets of neutral cannabinoids into tiny little bits and then usually add a little bit of food-grade soap. This allows the non-water-soluble compounds to suspend in aqueous (watery) solutions. There is some evidence that this does in fact increase the bioavailability of neutral cannabinoids but it also encourages these fats to make their way into our cells through novel pathways that we really don’t fully understand.
So, at Circle Labs, we work with nature on nature’s terms. We utilize natural compounds with minimal human intervention to help you get the most out of this amazing plant and her naturally occurring constituents. Our Whole Flower raw CBDa oil is a perfect example of that dedication.
